The Importance of Branding

Outside of advertising circles, you may never hear about branding. That’s because branding has become such a part of the landscape of our culture we rarely recognize a branding activity when we see one. From teenagers wearing Gap and Nike brand logos to adults driving BMWs, we are drawn to incorporate brands into lives. We all draw our personality and self-image from products such as cars, homes, clothing and even recreational activities, and products always have brand logos or symbols of some kind that represent them.

Why Branding is Important

Branding makes products more understandable and that means consumers will feel more comfortable with a product. A product brand may help people feel they belong to something that is important to them or to reinforce what they think of themselves. People who see themselves as successful will pay dearly for symbols that express that.

Branding is the marketing process of applying a personality or identity to a particular product or company. Now adorned with a new representative symbol, the product becomes more than just the product itself.

Most products are not much by themselves. A Nike shoe for instance is just another sports shoe barely distinguishable from all the others you could buy. There may be others of far greater quality, but branding strategy gets it recognition, whether for style or performance, or as a reminder of who else wears the shoes. The set of images or symbols used to represent the product or brand gives the product ongoing sales support when no company sales rep is there to promote it to sports shoe buyers.
