Mac Versus PC – Killer Branding and Awareness
Gosh, I laugh hysterically when I see these new Mac versus PC commercials. They are just so well done and on point. The newest spot is with the PC guy at a podium looking like a politician.??
He says, ?some people are giving up on Vista because it doesn?t ?work? the way they want it to?.? And, ?other people are going back to XP?. ?Ask not what Vista can do for you, ask what you can buy for Vista?. Brilliant!?
I?m not sure if this is getting folks to consider buying a Mac or not but I know it sure is entertaining and memorable. So I would guess it?s doing a good job at building brand awareness for Mac.? I can see a nice young group of people 14-24ish starting to get Mac and what they?re all about.??
Kudos to Mac for putting out some good stuff in an era where TV advertising is almost always horrible.

I’m kind of partial to the one where the PC guy hires the PR woman…

Only MacHeads will laugh and “get it” I mention the commercials to some of my PC friends and they roll their eyes (never smile) One friend actually said Mac users are brainwashed! – I’ve responded by saying “You guys live in a world with viruses banging on your door everyday (54% of all Windows networks in businesses that crash are never recoverable), They have to live with super uncool aps, and devoid of any kind of culture (I’ve never seen anyone on this planet proudly wearing a Windows hat or Microsoft t-shirt) AND to top it off they think their world is normal – who’s brainwashed? yeah, I’m weird!!

Ahh, David…you are the reason we are in business. Here’s why. The reason PC people don’t wear t-shirts is because they are treated as a commodity. General they are sold on price and customers perceive no real value otherwise. Whereas Mac has built a brand based on creativity and rebellion. Now you have a group that you can identify with. Sure they may have some cool features but it’s being part of the tribe that’s really important to Mac users (like all my designers).
This is why Mac kicks their butt on profit margins and repeat users. Mac knows it can’t compete and try to be everything to everyone. They’ve drawn their line in the sand and differentiated. This is how a company is suppose to do it.

Yeah, it’s about belonging. I was eading somewhere about the top 3 things that all humans in every culture want, one of them is a sense of belonging to a group or club!! Well said Scott and well don Mac!!
