Obama Branding

Obama has done a brilliant job at developing his brand identity?of “change”. But what the heck does that REALLY mean? Change what and how? Even the Republicans want out of Iraq so it’s not that. What does Obama mean when he says “change”?

And what does McCain mean when he says “security” or “patriotism?” What do any of these words mean when politicians use them? Interestingly, they’re usually code words that are left to definitions by the faithful who hear them.

I think it’s funny that, depending on who is doing the listening and de-coding, McCain is either a maverick realist or out-of-touch panderer, and Obama is either a visionary change-agent or lying political hack. Politics seems to be one of the only activities (or aspects of physical reality) wherein you really can be two things at once!

Well the question is what does Obama mean. I’m a full blown registered Republican but I really like Obama. I just don’t know what he’s trying to say. I think it would help if he just outlined what this change was to be. Then there would be no mystery. Am I buying marketing or real change?

McCain is a straight shooting, in your face kind of guy. I know what I’m getting if I vote him.

I know McCain but this is Obama’s chance to tell us what he means.

My friend, you honestly reveal your bias, not to mention the obfuscating color of your sunglasses, and for that I applaud you.

McCain is no more straight-shooting than Obama is vague…I could easily list for you the reasons why I don’t understand McCain (is he for Bush’s voodoo economics, or against them?), why I question his intelligence and sanity (Nuclear power and more offshore drilling?), and whether he has any integrity whatsoever (He has courted the religious reactionaries who he dismissed an election ago, and whose repeated public pronouncements rival Rev. Wright’s for insanity).

But I say ‘so what?’ The reason you don’t know what you’re getting with Obama is because you’ve already made up your mind, or you just haven’t had the chance to check his web site. So you can pose the question any way that you want, but you’ve already predetermined the answer. Obama is vague…to you. Or you don’t like what you know. To me, McCain is vague, and I certainly don’t like what I know.

There’s a lot of marketing going on for both candidates.

    Viva la difference!

    Stop using big words.

I could go to Obama’s site but I’d rather here his meaning. I actually really dig Obama and if there was ever a time I would not vote Republican this would be it. Don’t you think he should be less vague and not make voters have to go to his site for info?

I’m actually asking for more info without having to do any work to find it.

Do you think he’s doing a good job explaining what he’ll change?

  5. BIG Kahuna Says:

Of course it matters little as I live in Massachusetts where my Republican vote doesn’t count.

    Damn Kennedy’s!

    Yup.

    :-)
