Please let GM slip into bankruptcy, maybe they will smarten up.

To answer your questions:

CEO's WILL care if they get fired because now that the government owns them there are NO MORE golden parachutes. In fact new CEO's pay will greatly be decreased because they are government run. Americans are upset.

Corvette and Cadillac WERE once great brands in the 70's-80's. Not anymore (I owned a vette in the 80's). They are second and third tier now behind Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porche etc. etc. etc. Cadillac almost went out of business and made a stellar comeback but still fall short of Lexus, Mercedes, Audi and BMW. People don't say "It's the Cadillac of the industry" anymore...they say Mercedes.

Solstice was a fad car that probably won't be around long and Malibu is a big pile of crap that was copied from Toyota. Hummer was successful but like everything GM focused on BIG and they should have known that a gas crunch could hurt them. A simple SWOT analysis would tell you that.

Bush (Republicans) don't believe in socialism. The government should never run private banks, auto industry, mortgage companies etc. Because when they do it impacts all Americans. It works directly against capitalism.

GM is a failure and has been for 20 years. I personally can't wait for them to go under then maybe we'll get a bunch of these guys popping up:

Big Kahuna,

I wonder what kind of car company we'd have if we let them slip into bankruptcy. When they reform they might actually be a better company.

Do you really think CEO's are worried about Obama firing them when their golden handshakes are usually in the 20-30 million dollar range? At that level there is no shame in being let go.

Do really believe that GM doesn't make cars people want? What about Corvette, Cadillac, Solstice, Malibu - these are all good sellers. The Hummers were doing well until the gas prices went up. GM doesn't control gas prices, nor does it control the economy. ALL car companies have the odd dog in their line up.

I think Capitalism is still there no matter what. If the GM and Chryco are as bad as you say nothing will save them and probably shouldn't. If that leaves a void some entrepreneur will fill it in, GUARANTEED. Bush wasn't a socialist and he started the bail outs. Obama is carrying them on, but he is deemed a socialist - why? Doesn't seem a fair criticism. The U.S. is structured around capitalism, to suggest it is sliding into socialism is simplistic.

This economy is unprecedented. I think we have to believe that our governments have smarter people than us on their teams. At the end of the day it is simply human judgement and none of us is perfect. It's all a theory.

What is in it for Obama to control you? I don't get it. Was Bush controlling you too? And let's suggest that you are correct about Obama, exactly how is he controlling you? You still have your freedom of choice to buy what ever vehicle you like, where to invest your loot and where you want to live. What control does he have over Americans?

That 7.5% from Unions prices them out of the market. The foreign car makers are traditional $1500-$2,000 less on comparable models. And since GM's brand stands for nothing they lose sales. Toyota's are seen as one of if not the most reliable cars on the market. Can GM really say that? Unions have been sucking the blood from GM fpr 20 years.

The point of this blog is simple. GM hasn't seen the big picture for along time. Just look at the Hummer brand which is about to go under. They've created cars that consumers just don't want to buy when compared to Honda/Toyota.

Lastly, the main point of this blog was that the President of the United States should never be involved in corporations. Our new elected democratic government is using this disaster to slowly take us down the road to socialism. Anyone that takes money from Obama will basically be his puppet. Some of the banks that original took bailout funds want to return the money to get from under Obama's grip but the government refuses to take the money back? Why do you think that is?

Let me pose a question, the new CEO of GM, do you think he'll do what's right for the company or the government moving forward? Knowing that Obama can fire him at will which road do you think he'll take.

The saddest part of the banks, mortgage, housing, car debacle is that Obama is using this to CONTROL us. What the frig happened to capitalism? Where does it say if you become so large you can't fail? Seriously the President now controls our banks, auto industry and housing market. That's scary and against all forms of capitalism.

In all fairness to the Big 3, if people can't get financing due to a recession I hear is on, then they can't buy cars. This is the car company's bad management? Don't forget your friends on Wall St. I hope you realize Honda and Toyota are hurting too. Toyota lost money for the first time in their history, but nobody is questioning their business acumen. Why? Brand perception.

Don't forget Chrysler invented the Minivan which outsold every other minivan since it's launch in '84. That's 19 straight years. It is still the biggest seller in Canada in that category even in this recession. Granted they have a corporate brand that is the preferred whipping post of the Amercian public. Maybe they will have to bring back Iacoca.

FYI: Union wages only represent 7.5% of the cost of a Big 3 vehicle, that's hardly enough to drive them into the ground - don't forget - the bankers are really at the wheel of this one.

I am not pro union myself but pro reality. If the banks opened their vaults tomorrow, cars and homes would start selling again. It seems the administrations refuse to control them (they who caused this mess) and choose to victimize entrepreneurs caught in the fire storm.

On another note: We aren't ready for electric cars yet. What happens when you run out of power on an interstate and it takes 8 hours to recharge? This is the big reason I would never consider an electric. Talk about having to plan your commute.

I'd like to look at a hybrid but a question I see no one asking is: When that recharge battery dies, how much to replace? My guess is "plenty", probably worse than a transmission.

For those reading my rant above, I live just south of Detroit in Canada. If you don't think the Big 3 know how to make money, you are sadly mistaken. As they say, there is no shame in failing, there is only shame in not getting back up.

Please tell me you don't think BO taking over businesses is a good thing? I agree let capitalism shine - Stop giving them money, let them fail. Crash and burn if need be but get the gov't OUT of the way! Leave the union votes secret, let companies pay their employees as much as they want to - out of their own pockets!

See you at the tea party?? April 15th

Well said. I had the same reaction to this morning's news. Who's next on the "target" list? The more "meddling" from the government, the longer the recession will last.
